Backing fabric 25″ x 15″

Wadding 25″ x 15″

Instructions:

Download Dear Santa Pattern Templates. Join stocking template sheets on dotted line.

PLEASE READ THROUGH ALL DIRECTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING

ALL SEAMS ARE ¼″

Pattern has already been reversed ready for you to trace. Dotted lines show where one piece goes beneath another.

Using pattern templates, trace all pieces individually on to fusible web (bondaweb), leaving about ¼″ between each shape. Where one piece goes beneath another, remember to trace around dotted line.
Cut out each bondaweb shape, slightly larger than shape (not directly on drawn line).
Iron bondaweb shapes on to wrong side of appropriate fabric using colour picture as a guide.
Now cut out each shape from fabric directly on drawn line.

Using colour picture as a guide, place all of the appliqué pieces into their correct position on the background fabric. Note: Place in position and overlap pieces where appropriate. Once you are happy with the positioning, iron shapes into place on background fabric.

Appliqué the design using desired appliqué method. I used a buttonhole stitch, but you may prefer to hand or machine appliqué.
Embroider words using backstitch and six strands of black embroidery thread or cotton perlé.

Cut down appliquéd background to 20½″ by 10½″.
Piece together five of the 2½″ squares for top border. (Finished length = 10½″). Press all seams in one direction. Repeat for the bottom border.
Sew these pieced borders to the top and bottom of the appliquéd background. Press seams towards border strips.
Piece together twelve of the 2½″ squares for side border. (Finished length=24½″). Press all seams in one direction. Repeat for other side border.
Sew these pieced borders to each side of the appliquéd background. Press seams towards border strips.

To finish wallhanging

Layer up wall hanging with backing fabric and sandwich wadding between. Tack thoroughly all over to hold layers in place.

Quilt wall hanging in desired manner. (I cross-hatched the background fabric, outline stitched the stocking, heart and stars and then quilted the squares in-the-ditch)

Sew a button in the centre of each of the stars and three small buttons for holly berries, making sure not to sew right through to back of the quilt.

Finally, sew a double thickness binding on to wall hanging. I used binding cut 2 ¼″ wide and then ironed double (wrong sides together). Then align raw edges of binding to raw edges of quilt and machines sew. Finally I turn binding to back and slip stitch to the machine sewn stitches.

CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR STOCKING IS READY TO BE HUNG!
